Kystriksveien Coastal Road
The National Geographic listed the Fv17 Kystriksveien coastal road in Norway as one of the 'World’s most Scenic Routes', so we thought we'd better check it out.
As well as stunning scenery along the majority of the route, there are some fascinating natural spectacles to be seen. I could have spent hours watching the Saltstraumen maelstrom - the world's largest tidal current that creates whirlpools of up to 10m in diameter! The maelstrom is created in a 3km long and 150m wide strait with 400 million cubic meters of water flowing through in the space of 6 hours.
Further along the route you can see part of Svartisen - Norway's second largest glacier.
As we were looking at the glacier, something else caught my eye in the water below...
There are six ferry crossings on the coastal route. We only did two of these because the weather forecast was poor for the foreseeable future so we didn't drive the entire route, but the ferry crossings we did were quite spectacular.
If you're looking for a good road trip, we can recommend this one!
